Welcome to About Those Commas (and some other stuff)!

I started this newsletter primarily to provide a space to answer writers’ questions (students mostly, but pretty much anyone to be honest). I’m an editor, and I’ve taught at the college level for almost 15 years. I’ve read and commented on thousands of papers, stories, poems, and book manuscripts.

I’ve also learned that it’s hard for a lot of people to ask for assistance. They may work weird hours and find it hard to get to their teacher or tutoring center. They may not have access to private tutoring or editorial help. They (not YOU, of course) may feel, well, foolish in asking a question.

This newsletter can help work around those issues.

Substack is available 24 hours a day. Drop those questions and read answers on your schedule. Emails are easy, even on the worst data plan.

There is a paid tier (thank you supporters!), but actual student question answering will take place in the free-to-the-public posts (because we all know about a student’s budget). Subscriptions allow me to post more and answer those questions, but writing assistance stays outside the paywall. If a paid subscription isn’t in the cards right now, keep sending questions and tell your friends. That helps out!

Into the horror thing? I’ve got you covered.

I pinky-swear never to name names when I answer questions. Just drop me a line at aboutthosecommas@gmail.com, and I’ll answer them here. The world will never know.
